BBC “Skins” is a series that could never be correctly reproduced in the States, although MTV has stated that they are going to try. I just don’t see how the American public and/or culture would be willing to accept such a down-to-earth nit and gritty set of normal characters, who smoke, curse, drink, and have sex every opportunity that they get. Our shows tend to be focused on putting models into every role possible – who maintain their incredible looks despite the worst of conditions.
But that isn’t what makes the series great. What makes the series great is the depth with which we get to know all of the characters. How you care for the biggest losers or enjoy the simpliest things in life (e.g. eating donuts). This series offers us so much more then the simple ‘right and wrong’ culture that Americans have become so entrenched in.
If you haven’t seen the first and second season, google it or (better yet) buy the series on DVD. It may be a little late to catch up on Season 3, as we are down to the last few episodes for this season, but you can guess what I am going to be watching tonight…..
