I never grew up reading the JSA. Like other DC Comics, I just could not get into the characters as a kid, but as an adult, I came to appreciate the family relationship that ties the JSA together. Over the last few years, I have come to rely on the series and characters to provide a level of interest that some of my other favorites have lost. (e.g. X-Men).
I realize that I tend to prefer team comics more then the individual hero comics, but that is because I prefer the interactions, the relationships, and the ties that bind them together.
I read the first issue of JSA All-stars this weekend, and it lacked everything that the JSA has provided. I did not feel the family. I did not feel a team. And above all, I did not feel that there was a common thread that tied them together. Yes, they tried to give it to us in a brief conversation between Stargirl and Powergirl, but it failed.
I will give this comic another couple of chances, but from the first issue, I don’t have much hope.
Dropping it soon.
