2 Cent Review – Wanted: Hal Jordan

by Zimm on January 2, 2010

I’ve been spending a lot of my time trying to catch up on some previous Green Lantern back stories, which included the “Green Lantern – Wanted: Hal Jordan” graphic novel.

I think that this novel reminded me of why I never really got into Hal Jordan as a character.  His character is nothing more then an overcompensating insecure heterosexual male.  Women need to be rescued.  He needs to mark his territory on everything to show how great he is, and if a character happens to be gay, he needs to verbally reinforce the fact that he is straight.

Apparently, the Tasmanian Devil had a crush on GL when they were both in the JLA together.  Something that he was ‘teased about’ and apparently something that he was not strong enough to overcome and/or forget.  (As stated in the Wanted graphic novel) Something that I never read about in the Tasmanian Devil’s original coming out (JL Quarterly #8) or at any other time.  Note:  I will have to dig out the JL Quarterly and reread it, but this seems to be some embellishments upon that part of the story.

With that said…..

Was this something that Geoff Johns added to the story, so as to ‘throw-in’ the fact (and a reminder) that the Tasmanian Devil is gay?  Was it Geoff who tried to show GL as the “macho hetero man” who simply has to remind you that he is not interested?  ….reinforcing the myth that gay men are constantly after straight men.   UGH!

I’m not happy with this story.  It seems a tad bit insulting, but it is Hal Jordan – and there was a reason that I never read his books in the first place.   But no matter which way you slice it, I still don’t like the way that Geoff unfolded this part of the story and ended with Hal saying, “I told you before, Taz.  You’re not my type.”

My 2 Cents - Geoff could have done a better job in handling this.  But was it the character or was it the writer that has a streak of insecurity and homophobia running through him?  Hopefully, it was neither and just a poor moment of writing.
