Without giving anything away to our dear American Friends (who like me, HATE spoilers) Series Five of Dr. Who launched last night here in Britain to a cracking start.
From the first five seconds The Eleventh Hour was fantastic. A new Doctor, a new companion, a new Tardis (I want to live there), revamped theme music and even a new Logo. Pretty much everything you’d expect from a re-launch.
Matt Smith’s debut attracted 8 million viewers – that’s almost 37% of the audience share – all clambering to see if he could live up to his predecessors. Well, he does. And as Stephen Moffat states: “we’ve a proper bonkers Doctor”. I was sceptical when I first saw his press release last year… The Doctor has to be sexy… and as gay geeks sometimes are loathe to admit, we need ‘em sexy. Photos don’t really do him justice. But see him in action and yes, there is something profoundly sexy about this one – albeit a very geeky sexy. I do have a thing for floppy hair.
Companions? Well, they too must be sexy to appeal to both sides of the coin… (come on… admit it… Tate was a sexy hilarious mind…). Karen Gillan as Amy Pond is, in-fact, probably the sexiest companion ever – Very pretty, Scottish, quirky and a little bit neurotic her self.
After Tennant decided to step down we thought – OK, Doctors come and go… We love David, but it’s not the end of Time…. But Davies? Leaving the Helm? Ack. Well, geeks everywhere need not fear. We already knew how fantastic a writer he was (remember those freakin’ scary stone angels in the BAFTA winning episode?), but taking on the leadership of Dr. Who is something he was built for.
Somewhere in all of this I do have to mention… there is a lovely, lovely chap playing a bit part – a friend of Amy Pond…. Jeff… oh… Jeff…. Please don’t be in only one episode… you are sooooooooo dreamy…. (btw….Tom Hopper is his real name).
Anyway… I digress… To our American friends who will have to wait until July to catch up, but I do apologise for rubbing it in. But, I have to admit, this first glimpse into the new world was just a BIG BBC tease… we over here have to wait a while before the series actually gets going. But, the wait will be worth it.
